Plan how you will receive pay, manage spending money and protect your financial information while you are at camp.
Each camp has its own payroll process. Some camps pay by check, direct deposit, payroll card or another approved method. Ask your camp when you will be paid, how payment is issued and what documents are needed.
Do not assume that payment will be available immediately after arrival. Bring enough personal funds for early expenses.
If your camp recommends opening a U.S. bank account, ask which local banks are convenient and what identification they require. Requirements can vary by bank and location.
Credit, debit and prepaid cards can be useful, but fees may apply for international transactions, ATM withdrawals or currency conversion. Keep some emergency funds available, but avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
Keep copies of pay stubs, bank statements, tax forms and account closing documents. You may need them for taxes, refunds, program records or future U.S. travel.
Before leaving the United States, ask your bank how to close the account or access remaining funds from abroad.
Protect your card, PIN, online banking password and Social Security number. Do not share account access with other people, and report lost or stolen cards immediately.
Confirm payroll details, budget for early expenses and keep your financial records organized throughout the program.
