Things to Know

Pre-Departure Documents

Organize the key documents you may need for your J-1 visa appointment, U.S. entry and Camp USA program records before you travel.

Passport Valid for travel
DS-2019Program eligibility form
I-901SEVIS fee receipt
FundsProof if requested

Valid passport

Your passport should be valid for entry to the United States and should have at least one blank page. Many travelers are advised to keep a passport valid for six months beyond the intended stay, though some countries may be exempt from that rule.

If you live or study outside your home country, check whether you need a residence permit, student permit or re-entry document for the country you will return to after your Camp USA program.

  • Check your passport expiration date early
  • Make sure your name matches your program documents
  • Confirm whether you need re-entry permission for another country

DS-2019 form

The DS-2019 is the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor status. It is created from your program information and is required for the J-1 visa application process.

Review your DS-2019 carefully. It identifies your sponsor, program category, SEVIS number, program purpose and the official dates connected to your U.S. exchange program.

  • Confirm spelling of your name and personal details
  • Check program start and end dates
  • Keep your SEVIS number accessible for later program steps
  • Work only with the approved host listed for your program unless GEC gives written approval

SEVIS I-901 fee receipt

GEC completes the required SEVIS fee process as part of your paperwork. Even when the Embassy or Consulate can verify payment electronically, it is wise to bring proof of payment to your visa appointment.

You can print the payment confirmation from the official I-901 website using your SEVIS ID, last name and date of birth exactly as they appear on your DS-2019.

GEC Work Agreement

The GEC Work Agreement confirms the approved work opportunity connected to your program. It includes important role details and is signed by the required parties before you travel.

Read this document carefully before signing. It should match your understanding of the position, dates, pay, job description and housing or transportation details when applicable.

  • Review work dates and arrival expectations
  • Check pay rate, duties and host details
  • Bring the agreement to your visa appointment if instructed
  • Do not accept another work opportunity without written GEC approval

Evidence of personal funds

You may need to show that you have enough personal funds for arrival costs, transportation, deposits or other early expenses before your first payment from camp.

Prepare proof of available funds in case it is requested by GEC, the Embassy or Consulate, or an officer at the U.S. port of entry. Follow the amount and documentation instructions provided for your case.

  • Carry access to emergency funds
  • Keep bank or financial support documents available
  • Budget for arrival expenses and personal needs
