You may need a Social Security number for payroll and tax reporting while working at camp. In most cases, you should wait until you have arrived in the United States and your SEVIS record has been validated before applying.
Follow the timing instructions provided by GEC, your host camp or your local partner. Applying too early can delay or complicate the process.
Bring original documents with you to the Social Security Administration office. Copies are useful for backup, but original documents are usually required for the application.
Complete the application and answer questions about your J-1 program and work authorization. The office may verify your information through government systems before accepting or processing the application.
If the office cannot verify your record immediately, stay calm and contact GEC for guidance.
Your Social Security card is mailed to the address on your application. Processing and mailing times vary. Ask your camp how payroll will be handled while you are waiting for the card.
Your Social Security number is unique to you. Keep it for future U.S. tax or employment records if you return on another authorized program.
